Post-Arrival Guide: What Every International Student Should Know

Getting your visa approved and boarding the flight is a huge milestone, but the first few weeks after you land set the tone for your entire study abroad experience. A little planning here saves a lot of stress later.

1. Register With Your University Immediately

Most institutions require in-person enrollment confirmation within a set window after arrival, often tied to keeping your visa status valid. This is always the very first stop on our post-arrival checklist.

2. Sort Out Local Essentials Early

  • Open a local bank account so you can receive funds and pay rent without high transfer fees
  • Get a local SIM card and set up mobile data before you need it
  • Register with local authorities or a police station if your visa category requires it
  • Arrange health insurance enrollment and locate the nearest clinic to your accommodation

3. Attend Orientation Week

Orientation isn't just a formality — it's where you'll meet your academic advisor, understand your course structure, and connect with other international students who are navigating exactly the same adjustment you are.

4. Understand Your Visa Conditions

Work-hour limits, address reporting requirements, and renewal timelines differ by country and visa type. Knowing these conditions cold from day one protects your status and keeps future visa renewals or graduate work permits straightforward.

5. Build Your Support Network

Homesickness is normal, and it hits almost everyone in the first month. Joining student societies, connecting with your university's international student office, and staying in touch with your consultant back home all make the transition easier.
